Isidoro Angelo Figliolini

(1877-1955)

Angelo FiglioliniIsidoro Angelo Figliolini was born in Vercelli on 24 August 1877, was mandolinist, composer and teacher.

Initially a student of  violin with Nicola Ravazzani, then after his death with Lanino Andrea, finally devoted himself to the study of the mandolin and guitar.

He worked closely with the bimonthly magazine Concerto, Giornale di musica per Mandolino, Chitarra e Pianoforte (published in Bologna by Comellini & Turco at 10 and 30 of each month)  writing many pages, with sometimes virtuosic music but always in a good taste, which faced great success.

Among his songs Preghiera d'un angelo (1898) for two mandolins and guitar was especially appreciated. This usic was published on issue no. 14 year II of Il Concerto, reached its ninth edition.

He also published a study on the mandolin by the ironic title of "Dimenticanze mandolinistiche per concertisti" (Mandolin Forgotten Things for Concert Performers), that now would certainly be worthy to re-read and evaluate.

Apart from being a good mandolin performer and composer, he was director of the mandolin orchestra in Vercelli and a distinguished teacher with his flourishing school.

He composed many pages for solo mandolino, duo (mostly mandolin & guitar), trio (2 mandolins and guitar and also harp) and plactrum quartet (two mandolin, tenor mandola & guitar), for plectrum orchestra and orchestrina, and music for small orchestra and pianoforte (Fu un sogno : valse hesitation, published by Zanibon in 1930).

Among his works is worthy mentioning Il mio povero fiore, Elegia and Abbandono melodia di concerto for mandolin & guitar, Barcarola for trio (two mandolins & guitar), which according to Negri are "pages written in good taste and  much lovely for their original melodies."

For solo guitar he composed Fantasia-Capriccio, music which was in the repertory of Milanese player Amleto Tempestini (from La Chitarra, 1941) and is also mentioned a music bearing the title "Capriccio - Il maggiolino". Most of his music is still handwritten.

He died on 23 July 1955 in Vercelli.
