Giuseppe Branzoli

(1845 - 1909)

Branzoli, storico concerto del 1889Giuseppe Branzoli was born in Cento April 5, 1835, or according to the Schmidl and B. Terzi at Imola in 1845, died in Rome in 1909 or in November 1904 in accordance with B. Terzi, op. cit.

He settled in Rome in the early years of his life, where he studied guitar, mandolin, viola and composition. He became also interested in violin making, and soon became an expert in this discipline. As a violist he was active in several orchestras and in 1858 became a member of the Philharmonic Academy of Rome, by participating with it in numerous musical events, as a musician and composer.

He became professor of the Academy of St. Cecilia. In the summer of 1860 he performed as a violinist with the Philharmonic, in a Sunday concert at the Palazzo Lancellotti was performed a trio of his own composition, while at the end of July was made one of his works, written to a libretto by the young countess Teresa Gnoli, entitled Torquato Tasso in Sorrento. This work had a great success, even the good interpretation of the artists, especially the standard C. Negrini, but it is not know to have had other representations.

Acclaimed for his work as a musician, a performer and scholar, Branzoli organized in 1889 with the Philharmonic, a historic concert of musical theater, performing music of Giulio Caccini and Claudio Monteverdi, with  Baroque instruments.

Connoisseur of historical instruments, he started a collection in the library of the Academy of St. Cecilia. Here in 1896, occupied an executive position he held until his death in Rome January 21, 1909.

Among his many compositions (mostly pieces for mandolin and piano, describing fantasies for 2 mandolins, mandola and guitar or piano, romance for voice and piano, etc..) printed in Rome, Florence and Milan, it is worth mention Lieti Momenti, raccolta di 8 divertimenti per mandolino o violino con acc. di pianoforte, Florence, senza data; Rimenbranze dell'opera Orfeo di G.C. Gluck per mand. e pf., Florence, no date; an easy transcription for piano of the same work, Florence, no date,; Inno all'Italia di C. D'Ormeville, per coro all'unisono (canto e pf.), Roma 1893 and 1894. At the library of St. Cecilia in Rome many manuscripts of instrumental music are preserved: Quintetto con pianoforte (Acc. ms. 3133); Fantasia per clarino e pianoforte (Acc. ms. 3189); Fantasia per tromba e orchestra (Acc. ms. 3238) e Sinfonia a piena orchestra (partitura, Acc. ms. 3269), etc.

When he died he was the director of the magazine Il Mandolino romano and librarian of the Royal High School S. Cecilia in Rome..

As a scholar and teacher, he wrote the following books:

  • Metodo Teorico-Pratico per mandolino napoletano o romano. In two parts, printes in Florence and Rome, no date. This achieved widespread proving particularly successful and was awarded a gold medal at the International Music in Bologna in 1888 and the Palace of Industry, in Paris, 1890. It was translated into several languages and reprinted several times in Milan;
  • Metodo Teorico-Pratico per mandolino napoletano o romano / Distribuito in 168 lezioni progressive con sonatine e duetti), reprint in Milan of previous title until 1967;
  • Ricerche sullo studio del Liuto, Rome, 1889;
  • Sunto storico dell'intavolatura: Metodo pratico per suonare il Liuto corredato da antiche melodie tratte da celebri autori, Rome no date, and Florence 1889;
  • Manuale storico del violinista, Florence 1894.
  • Metodo teorico pratico per chitarra, Florence 1905 e Milano 1942 with double parallel text, Italian and French;
  • Metodo teorico-pratico per mandolino lombardo distribuito in 98 lezioni, Florence, no date, then 1906;
  • La scuola della velocità per il mandolino (scioglidita), Florence, no date;
  • Miscellanea musicale: raccolta di articoli pubblicati in alcuni periodici musicali con l'aggiunta di importanti note, Camerino, 1882;
  • Dell'Udito, Schediasmi Musicali, Bologna-Roma 1894 (Conferenza tenuta in Bologna, Sala dei Fiorentini, 5 Marzo 1891);
  • Giuseppe Verdi, appunti e aneddoti, in "Giornale arcadico", s. 3, IV (1901), quaderno 38, pp. 149-157.
